Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL), a joint venture of BAE Systems and Rheinmetall, has awarded a subcontract to Atec Engineering Solutions to deliver power distribution boxes.    

Worth £8m, the six-year contract is part of the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) project to upgrade the British Army’s Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank (MBT).

RBSL managing director Colin McClean said: “This contract is the latest in a series of UK supplier contracts awarded by RBSL for Challenger 3, ensuring the programme benefits from the best of British engineering and manufacturing whilst also sustaining valuable skills across the country.”

Atec will provide RBSL with the hull contactor panel, hull distribution junction box, and battery master switch box.

The upgraded power management and distribution system will offer protected power sources to the tank and ensure safe operation for Challenger 3 crews.

The company will take up related work at its manufacturing facility in Manchester, UK.

Atec Engineering Solutions managing director John Bowden said: “This is a significant and vital upgrade in capability for Challenger 3 and it aligns perfectly with our business strategy to grow our support to the UK MoD, whom we have supported in land, sea, and air applications for more than 75 years.

“We are excited to continue our relationship with RBSL and being part of the delivery of improved land capability in the UK.”

As part of the contract, the company will recruit seven more experts and apprentices. Atec also plans more recruitment over the next three years.

To equip the British Army’s new Boxer vehicles with electronic modules and cable harness assemblies, the RBSL has awarded a ten-year contract worth £10m to TT Electronics.     

The assemblies will provide Boxer vehicles with mission critical capabilities.

RBSL also successfully tested the ability of a Boxer Mission Module to integrate and fire 120mm mortar rounds from the Boxer vehicle. 

The demonstration held at Salisbury Plain, UK, displayed the ability of the Boxer to accommodate an updated capability.
