Fayette, N.Y. ― An air conditioning unit plugged into a small extension cord started a fire in a home in Seneca County on Monday morning, deputies said.

At 4:43 a.m. deputies arrived at 3863 State Route 96 and found both residents outside the burning home, according to a news release from the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire on the second floor in a bedroom, deputies said.

Firefighters found a melted extension cord, deputies said. It was determined that the air conditioning unit plugged into the extension cord overloaded the cord and caught clothing around it on fire, deputies said.

The fire comes as a surge of heat engulfs Central New York in high temperatures.
