Billy Corgan vividly remembers the rush he got when he first listened to the Beatles as a preteen in his Chicago basement. It’s a feeling that eventually propelled him to rock superstardom as lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins.

But Corgan said he also recalls getting a similar rush watching Dick the Bruiser, Harley Race and his other favorite pro-wrestling stars in that same basement. It’s that emotional reaction that led to an unlikely turn as a wrestling producer and promoter in 2011.

An Ohio justice has recommended that a conservative podcaster who embraces former President Donald Trump’s discredited claims of a stolen 2020 election be tossed from Ohio’s fall ballot. Terpsehore “Tore” Maras is running for secretary of state. Retired Ohio Supreme Court Justice Terrence O’Donnell recommended against Maras on Friday, a day after an hourslong protest hearing on signature challenges and her party affiliation. O'Donnell found that 18 of the 35 challenged signatures that had qualified Maras for the ballot were invalid, taking her below the 5,000 required. The issue now returns to GOP Secretary of State Frank LaRose’s office.

Casemiro is set to make his debut for Manchester United as the team heads to Southampton looking to follow up its morale-boosting win over Liverpool on Monday. The 2-1 loss at United left Liverpool without a win after three rounds but is a big favorite to beat Bournemouth. Arsenal is seeking a fourth straight win when it hosts Fulham. Sevilla visits promoted Almería looking for its first Spanish league win of the season. Roma forward Paulo Dybala returns to Juventus just three months after crying at the end of his final home match for the Bianconeri. In the Bundesliga, Borussia Mönchengladbach makes the daunting trip to Bayern Munich. In the French league, a victory for Lens at home to Rennes would move it provisionally into first place.

The first woman Serena Williams will face in what is expected to be the last tournament of her stellar career says she is honored to play someone she remembers watching on TV as a child. Danka Kovinic is a 27-year-old from Montenegro who has never been past the second round at the U.S. Open or the third round at any Grand Slam tournament. She says she has crossed paths with Williams in locker rooms on tour but couldn’t strike up the nerve to ask if they could practice together. Kovinic has never hit a ball in Arthur Ashe Stadium, although she is hoping to practice there over the weekend before facing Williams on Monday night.

The attorney for a California teenager who has accused a Buffalo Bills rookie and two of his former college teammates of gang rape says the NFL team has not contacted him despite saying it had conducted a “thorough investigation.” Dan Gilleon said he has not heard from team officials since first informing them of the allegations against Bills punter Matt Araiza in late July. The 22-year-old Araiza and two former teammates at San Diego State are accused of the assault in a lawsuit. A police investigation is currently being evaluated by San Diego prosecutors.

Everton has strengthened its flagging attack by signing Neal Maupay from English Premier League rival Brighton. The French striker moved for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal. He plugs the gap left by Brazil international Richarlison, who joined Tottenham in this transfer window. Everton’s other main striker is Dominic Calvert-Lewin. But he is out injured and manager Frank Lampard has been playing without a recognized center forward this season.

A new Missouri law will soon outlaw books with sexually explicit images from school libraries. The law takes effect Sunday. It will make it a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail for educators to give K-12 students books with photos, drawings or other visual depictions that are sexually explicit. There are exceptions for anatomy, biology, art or other images that are educational. The law does not ban written descriptions that might be considered sexually explicit. The Missouri Association of School Librarians says the law likely will only apply to certain comic books and graphic novels, which are longer comic books.

Daniel Suarez has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Trackhouse Racing for the 2023 season. The 30-year-old Suarez joined Trackhouse before its inaugural season in 2021. Virginia is currently on a path toward adopting California’s new, stringent rules for transitioning to zero-emission vehicles because of 2021 legislation that involved adopting the West Coast state’s emissions standards. That's according to attorneys and state officials who weighed in after California regulators adopted the new rules Thursday. Last year's legislation was a key priority of environmental advocates. House Republicans opposed it at the time. They now control the chamber and said Friday they would make a second push next year to unlink Virginia’s standards from California's. Environmental attorneys said updating Virginia's standards would be a win for consumers and clean air.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden cast the 2022 elections at a heavily publicized rally just outside the Beltway this week as a choice between Democrats who are trying to fix roads and bring down health care costs and extreme Republicans pushing “semi-fascism” and bent on “destroying America.”

Lille has taken out its frustrations from a thrashing by Paris Saint-Germain by beating promoted Ajaccio 3-1 in the French league. Lille was humiliated 7-1 by defending champion PSG last weekend and again it showed weakness in defense when Cyrille Bayala headed a late consolation for Ajaccio. Turkey midfielder Yusuf Yazici opened the scoring with a brilliant volley in the 17th minute. Brazilian defender Ismaily set up Jonathan Bamba for the visitors’ second  before halftime. Tiago Djalo got Lille’s third in the 67th. Canada forward Jonathan David missed the chance to score his third goal of the season for Lille when he struck the post with a penalty in the 90th minute.

A father and son who were desperately clinging to a cooler at the outermost edge of Boston Harbor after their lobster boat sank were rescued by the Boston Police Department’s harbor patrol unit in the nick of time. Police say officers Stephen Merrick and Garrett Boyle responded to a call for a boat taking on water at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday near Graves Light Station. The officers spotted the two men hanging on to the bobbing cooler. The dramatic rescue was caught on police body camera video. The officers pulled the men on board and took them to shore to be treated for minor injuries.

To Democrats championing the White House’s student loan forgiveness plan, it was the long-awaited delivery of one of President Joe Biden’s campaign promises. To Republicans — and even some in the president’s own party — it was an ill-advised move that was unfair to those who had diligently paid back their loans or decided not to go to college. In the student debt relief plan, both parties see an opportunity to boost their own political message ahead of the critical November midterm elections. While Democrats contended that the loan forgiveness would provide a lifeline for struggling working-class families, Republicans charged that it’s a giveaway to the “elites.”

When the Minnesota Vikings held out their entire starting offense for last weekend’s second preseason game, there was a notable addition to the list — K.J. Osborn. Minnesota features one of the league’s top duos in Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen. Osborn, the third-year receiver, has clearly established himself as the next man up in the pecking order. It’s a position that carries more significance for the offense being implemented by new coach Kevin O’Connell. The willingness to hold Osborn out of a preseason game is a sign of his importance to the Vikings.

PHILADELPHIA — An organization that aims to raise awareness about domestic violence and help its victims defended its partnership with the Phillies on a domestic violence awareness night on Friday at Citizens Bank Park.

The identification of bones found in May on the receding shoreline of Lake Mead has resurfaced family memories of a 42-year-old Las Vegas father believed to have drowned 20 years ago. Thomas Erndt’s son, also named Tom Erndt, tells KSNV-TV in Las Vegas that his father began to struggle after jumping into the water during a nighttime family boat outing in August 2002. His older sister, Tina Bushman was 14. She remembered for the New York Times that waves on the lake that night were high. The Clark County coroner made the identification on Wednesday from among several sets of human remains found recently at the drought-stricken Colorado River reservoir behind Hoover Dam.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is warning about Russia’s military buildup in the Arctic and China’s increasing interest in that part of the world. During a visit to Canada’s north, Stoltenberg said Friday that the shortest path to North America for Russian missiles and bombers is over the North Pole. He says Russia has set up a new Arctic Command and has opened hundreds of new and former Soviet-era Arctic military sites, including airfields and deep-water ports. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau showcased some of the investments and activities that Canada is making during the visit by Stoltenberg.

The New Mexico Supreme Court is upholding a lower court decision to dismiss a lawsuit that sought to release prison inmates because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The court issued its opinion Thursday in a 2020 case brought by several inmates, the New Mexico Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico. The plaintiffs claimed the state’s COVID-19 response violated inmates' constitutional rights. Aside from reducing the prison population, the lawsuit sought to require the state to safeguard the health of inmates. The court noted that none of the inmates had filed a grievance with the Corrections Department before going to court.

A pipeline operator and two subsidiaries have agreed to plead guilty to negligently discharging oil off the Southern California coast in connection with a pipeline break that covered beaches with blobs of crude. The U.S. attorney’s office in Los Angeles said Friday that Houston-based Amplify Energy and two subsidiaries agreed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor and pay a $7 million fine and nearly $6 million in costs. The plea agreements still need to be approved by U.S. District Judge David Carter. The October 2021 leak in a pipeline that ferried crude oil from offshore platforms to the Southern California coast spilled about 25,000 gallons of crude into the ocean.

A pregnant Louisiana woman who was denied an abortion even though her fetus has a rare and fatal condition is asking Gov. John Bel Edwards to call a special session of the legislature to clarify the state’s abortion law. Nancy Davis said at a Friday news conference that she will travel out of the state next week for a “medically necessary” abortion. Davis is 15 weeks pregnant. Louisiana state law bans all abortions except if there is substantial risk of death or impairment to a woman if she continues her pregnancy and in the case of “medically futile” pregnancies. Legislators say Davis qualifies for an abortion and that a hospital misinterpreted the law.

The Nevada secretary of state’s office has approved new rules for counties to hand-count votes starting as soon as this fall’s midterm elections. The approval came amid an effort in some rural Nevada areas to count ballots by hand because of misinformation about voting machines. But the regulations will not apply to the one county that has committed to hand counting. That’s because Nye County will also use a parallel machine-counting process alongside its hand count. Interim Nye County Clerk Mark Kampf said in an interview earlier this month that all of the county's will resemble mail-in ballots.

A Colorado mother accused of plotting to kidnap her son from foster care after her teen daughter said she started associating with supporters of the QAnon conspiracy theory has been found guilty of conspiracy to commit second-degree kidnapping. Cynthia Abcug denied she was involved in planning a raid on the foster home where her then 7-year-old son lived in the fall of 2019. She had lost custody of him earlier that year after being accused of lying about him having seizures and other health problems in order to trick doctors into providing unnecessary care. Jurors also found Abcug found guilty of a misdemeanor count of child abuse.
