Chibi-Robo succeeded because Miyamoto took a liking to the character and project - My Nintendo News

A new interview has emerged with Chibi-Robo director Kenichi Nishi who takes about Nintendo’s under appreciated character who made his debut on the GameCube console in 2006. The game was first announced in 2003 and was under development by the team at Bandai and received decent previews from the press.who received a chance to play the game. The project was then mysteriously put on hold in 2004 and it then turned out that the project has been reignited by the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto who took a liking to both the character and the project.

Nishi won’t be drawn on exactly how or why the Chibi-Robo project moved from Bandai to Nintendo, but he does say that it was Miyamoto who was initially interested in the game, specifically because of the character design. At Nintendo’s request, Nishi was appointed director of the development team and was assigned to Kensuke Tanabe, a well-known producer, responsible for managing Nintendo’s third-party collaborations. “We worked on the development with Mr. Tanabe,” says Nishi. “We were advised to emphasise that the game should have a tactile feel and simple rules that anyone can play. We had our disagreements along the way, but we thoroughly discussed the game while respecting each other, and I remember it as a fun experience.

“We had several opportunities to have Mr. Miyamoto check the game during the process,” he tells us. “His most significant advice was that Chibi-Robo should be able to plug in and pull out his own power cord at power outlets in the wall.” If players allowed Chibi’s battery to run dry, he would pass out and wake up at his base, setting back their progress significantly, but if they managed to find a power socket in time, then they could top up his battery and push on that little bit further.”

The orignal Chibi-Robo was a really charming game. A little dark at times too. I think Nintendo could get away with making an HD remake of it today.

I agree! Ziplash left a lot to be desired :-/. They should’ve just stuck to the elements that made the GameCube Chibi Robot great. Oh well, I enjoyed the Chiba Robo Amiibo that I got from the game !

Thank goodness for Miyamoto here because I absolutely LOVE the GameCube Chibi Robot game 💕! I have very fond and fun memories of playing it with my siblings when I was younger! It’s such a fun and explorative game that still holds up today I would say. I’m also lucky to still have a copy with the prices for it being so high now lol. I’m never selling my copy.

This is probably a pipe dream but I would honestly FLIP if they remade and brought the GameCube Chibi robo game to the Nintendo Switch! Especially so that a newer generation can play the best Chibi Robo game and not the latest 3DS one from a while ago 😅. But I guess that game and Ribbit King is just a fantasy that might never happened but fingers are still crossed 🤞!
